Veterinary care for pet rats is generally less expensive than larger animals, but costs can still add up quickly.
Choosing a vet
It is best to look for an vet experienced with exotic pets. It’s recommended to get your pet rats registered at a local vet as soon as possible after taking them home. For regular health checks, but also easy access in case of an emergency.
Insurance
Pet insurance for pet rats is not common. Some exotic pet insurance companies do cover rats though.
Average costs
Here are some examples of what an vet visit will cost you:
- Consultation £30 - £50
- Meds (antibiotics or pain relief) £30 - £60
- Tumor/abscess removal £100 - £200
- Spaying/neutering £150 - £200
- Euthanasia £80 - £100

Emergency, out of hours, care starts between £150 - £200.
It’s recommended to set aside an emergency fund for unexpected expenses at the vet.
